When buying a chandelier, you must know exactly where it would go. It adds personality into that space making it more luxurious and elevated! No matter what you are looking for, the dimensions of your space are a key factor. You also have to take into account the type of chandelier you are looking for as there are lots of options out there- crystal, candle style, lantern, sputnik.
Make sure that the fixture is not too small or too large to make the room look disjointed. Of course, when you start shopping for your perfect chandelier, we recommend measuring your ceilings as well and the length and width of the room.
Positioning the chandelier consists of the following 2 factors:
- where it will be placed in the room and,
- its hanging height.
Mounting the chandelier in the wrong spot will impact the room’s overall aesthetic – if it hangs too low, it will hinder the flow of traffic through your home; if it’s too high, the light may be too dim to be useful.
Some helpful tips that we recommend for the measurement are as follows:
- Width: Measure your room’s length and width in feet and add those two numbers together. Then use that number as the width in inches for your chandelier.
- Height: The recommendation would be 3″ for every foot of space between the floor and ceiling. You find this number by multiplying the height of your ceiling (in feet) by three

When placing a chandelier in a specific room, reference some of our recommendations below:
Dining Room Chandelier
The dining room often has the least amount of foot traffic in your home, especially if it’s a formal dining room. Having a chandelier in the room just adds elegance to a formal dining experience.
You should hang it in the middle of the table and not the room because some of the additional furniture, like a buffet table, would off-center the chandelier itself and thus create an imbalance.
Living Room and/or Bedroom
To add that touch of class, using chandeliers in a living space just adds to the ambiance. In the bedroom or living room, make sure to center it either to the room or the bed, and you can also have the option of adding mini chandeliers over your nightstands in the Master Bedroom.
Foyer/Entryway
If you have a large foyer, a chandelier placed over a round table will provide a bold statement. In a small entryway, the chandelier should hang in the middle of the room. It adds to the grandeur of the entrance and your guest will most likely notice this chandelier the most, given that the foyer/entryway has few pieces of furniture.
The bottom of the chandelier should hang approximately 30″ – 36″ above the countertop and should be centered to the island. However, if you are hanging multiple pendant lights or mini chandeliers, we recommend placing the lights 30″ apart from each other along the width centerline of the island. If you will have three lights, center one above the middle of the island and then hang the other two 30″ apart on either side.
Apart from having the wall lights, chandeliers add in the extra light to need to get ready. They look amazing in Walk-in-closets. As a good rule, it should always hang above the level of your clothes.
Of course, for safety reasons, the bathroom chandelier should be enclosed or made for this moisture rich environment. Due to strict building codes, the chandelier must be at least 3′ from the edge of the tub or shower. You can either center it to the middle of your bathroom, or over your bathtub for a more luxurious soak!
